Former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak today withdrew his three-year-old defamation suit against DAP national publicity secretary Tony Pua and Media Rakyat owner Chan Chee Kong in relation to the Damansara MP's comments regarding 1MDB.

The settlement was recorded in Kuala Lumpur, before High Court judge Justice Ahmad Zaid Ibrahim.

Najib's lawyer Mohd Hafarizam Harun said his client has agreed to withdraw the suit with undisclosed terms.

"This withdrawal is with no liberty to file afresh," Hafarizam said.

Pua's lawyer Michelle Ng, who is also the Subang Jaya assemblyperson, confirmed the withdrawal of the suit.

This is the second withdrawal by Najib, after he earlier withdrew his suit against former MCA president Dr Ling Liong Sik.
Chan was represented by lawyer Shahid Adli Kamarudin.

This is the second legal suit withdrawal by Najib after he earlier withdrew his suit against former MCA president Dr Ling Liong Sik.

Today had initially been fixed for a decision on Pua and Chan's application to strike out Najib's suit.

This is Najib's first suit which he filed against Pua where the DAP MP at a speech during a dinner in Petaling Jaya, is said to have accused the premier as chairperson of the 1MDB advisory board of stealing the people's money

Najib filed the suit three years ago, claiming Pua's words had meant that he (Najib) was unfit and untrustworthy to hold public office.

The former PM also stated in his statement of claim that the video, which was uploaded onto YouTube, had close to 195,000 views as of March 2, 2015.

Najib further claimed that Chan had practised irresponsible journalism and that such slander had extensively damaged his reputation.

Najib had sought exemplary, aggravated and general damages. He also wanted an injunction to stop the defendants from repeating and publishing the slanderous and libellous statements.

Najib then filed a second suit against Pua last year for a Facebook Live session during Pua claimed the amendment to the tabling of the Syariah Court (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 (Act 355) was to divert public attention from 1MDB.

Pua, meanwhile, had also filed a class action misfeasance in public office suit against Najib following the losses made by 1MDB.

On Friday, Kuala Lumpur High Court judicial commissioner Faizah Jamaludin allowed Najib and the government to strike out the application.
