The woman passenger who was killed when a Klang-bound express bus overturned at KM33.5 of the Karak highway yesterday has been identified.

Gombak district deputy police chief Superintendent Tey Kong Seng said
he deceased was Emylia Md Zaki, 35, from Jerantut, Pahang.

She was seated just behind the bus driver and was reportedly pinned in the wreckage. She died at the scene.

Her husband and two children who were also travelling with her escaped with light injuries.

Tey said 36 other passengers on the bus were sent to the hospital for treatment while the 24-year old bus driver sustained only slight injuries in the 6.30pm incident.

He said the driver was believed to have been speeding along the middle lane when the crash occurred.

"Preliminary investigations showed that the bus was going downhill. Its brakes malfunctioned and the bus then tried to avoid hitting a car ahead. It swerved and crashed into the road divider before it overturned," he said.

Tey added police had taken the blood samples from the bus driver today for the drugs and alcohol tests while the bus was sent to Puspakom for a thorough inspection.

The case is being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
