Umno candidates compete on fund providing; Najib's ex-aide arrested

KINI ROUNDUP | Here are the key headlines you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

Umno candidates compete on fund providing

Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin pledged to restructure party assets if he becomes Umno president so that the returns can be channelled to the divisions which are now deprived of funding.

His competitor Tengku Razlaeigh Hamzah too made a similar pledge, stating that Umno's assets could be relooked at to generate better returns.

Hours after these two pledges were made, another main contender, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, joined in, promising to resume funding for Umno divisions if he wins.

Zahid also took a veiled swipe at Khairy, accusing him of using proposals by the BN reform committee for his own manifesto. Khairy heads the reform committee.

On a separate matter, Zahid claimed Umno can retake Putrajaya even before the next general election, stating that Harapan was in a "shaky" situation, despite BN having disintegrated from 13 parties to three.

Najib's ex-aide nabbed over 1MDB

A former aide to ex-prime minister Najib Abdul Razak was arrested and remanded for seven days in connection with the 1MDB scandal.

Tony Pua, special officer to the finance minister, rubbished Najib's denial that funds from Tun Razak Exchange City Bhd (TRXC) were not misappropriated.

TRXC lodged a police report over the alleged "siphoning" of RM3 billion of its funds.

Language row

Khairy declared that it was unacceptable of Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng issuing a statement in Mandarin on official matters.

DAP's Tras assemblyperson Chow Yu Hui defended Lim, stating that it was not an issue as the Finance Ministry statement was trilingual, which included the national language.

Lim stressed that his ministry's statement was in Malay while the more recent Chinese statement, which had generated controversy, was for his social media and did not carry the ministry's letterhead.

Mahathir said the language row was merely a minor gaffe and should not be prolonged.

Other Kinibites

Mahathir said the full cabinet line-up has been finalised and the swearing-in ceremony will take place soon.

Bersatu is mulling to expand into Sarawak but will not venture into Sabah out of respect for Warisan.

Mahathir met with Proton and Geely officials and test drove their soon to be launched SUV, praising the quality of the vehicle.

Tabung Harapan Malaysia crossed the RM100 million mark.

The Pakatan Harapan caucus on Indian issues said the issue of statelessness will be a top priority.

Looking ahead

MPs will be briefed by the Dewan Rakyat secretary ahead of their swearing-in next month.

Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail will attend the meeting of the Asean Committee on Disaster Management in Kuala Lumpur.
