Former premier Najib Abdul Razak and his wife Rosmah Mansor have withdrawn their defamation suit against PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli and Media Rakyat owner Chan Chee Kong filed three years ago at the High Court in Kuala Lumpur.

Rafizi and Chan also withdrew their counter-claim and these withdrawals were recorded before Judicial commissioner Rohani Ismail in her chambers today.

This is Najib's fifth withdrawal of defamation suits filed against politicians and the media.

Najib and Rosmah filed the suit following Rafizi's comments at a forum that fuel prices were maintained to allow Rosmah to buy more diamond rings.

Rafizi's lawyer Ranjit Singh confirmed the withdrawal of the suit.

He said that his client has been vindicated and the results of the 14th general election also showed that.

Ranjit said the trial for this case was initially fixed for next week.

Lawyer Mohd Hafarizam Harun appeared for Najib and Rosmah while Joanne Leong appeared for Chan.

Najib and Rosmah were also ordered by Rohani to pay total costs of RM20,000 to Rafizi and Chan, after the Apex court had ordered Rafizi and Chan to pay RM5,000 costs after they withdrew their appeal.

Ranjit confirmed to reporters that Najib and Rosmah were ordered to pay the total costs of RM20,000.

Najib and Rosmah in their statement of claim filed in April 2015, alleged that Rafizi's statement meant that they had unlawfully stolen the people's monies in relation to the removal of subsidies just to gain personally.

They claimed that Rafizi's allegations also meant that they had committed theft by pocketing the subsidy monies for themselves.

They further said it also meant that they were guilty of theft and corruption and had betrayed the people of the country by stealing public monies.

Since losing power in the May 9 general election, Najib has already dropped defamation suits against former transport minister and former MCA president, Dr Ling Liong Sik, PAS mouthpiece Harakah and two others, Damansara MP Tony Pua and news portal Malaysiakini relating to readers' comments on the Terengganu menteri besar imbroglio.

The other three mentioned above are related to 1MDB.

There is another suit pending by Najib against Pua.
