Reporters waiting for Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi at the MACC headquarters this morning were surprised by the arrival of former Felda chairperson Shahrir Abdul Samad.

Shahrir, clad in a white shirt, had arrived earlier before Zahid, about 9.40am.

He is believed to have his car parked outside the building and walked in alone.

Speaking to members of the media, Shahrir said he was there to have his statements recorded over "admission of receiving funds" but he did not divulge details.

Met upon his exit, Shahrir revealed he was questioned over political funds amounting to RM1 million which he received from the former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak.

He added that he had seen Najib in 2013 and asked for funds for political activities in Johor Baru.

Shahrir said there was nothing wrong with receiving political funds as this was neither illicit or illegal.

"When I went to see Najib, he was the Umno president and I was the Johor Baru Umno division chief and I asked for funds for political activities in Johor Baru.

"I received the cheque in November 2013, after the 13th general election. So I explained to the MACC that the funds were for political activities."

He also confirmed that his personal and Johor Baru Umno bank accounts had been frozen by the MACC.

Asked to comment on Najib's arrest, Shahrir said he hoped the authorities had the right evidence and a strong case.

"Najib told me to not allow Umno to let him face the problem alone," he said, adding that Umno members were calm in facing the matter (surrounding the 1MDB scandal).
