Since asset declarations by Pakatan Harapan elected representatives would involve their families as well, their privacy could be compromised if the matter is made public, said Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

"This involves a lot of people, including the family members. We are considering how much we can reveal to the public.

"It may affect the privacy of a lot more people like family members," he told a press conference at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya this morning.

Yesterday, Mahathir announced that the government intended to make it compulsory for all Harapan lawmakers to declare their assets to MACC.

Critics have often accused the prime minister of enriching his children, with his son Mokhzani being among the richest in Malaysia.

Mahathir has repeatedly denied that his children benefitted from government contracts or his position.

All Harapan lawmakers, including cabinet ministers, will also have to report any gifts they receive to the relevant authorities, he had said.

However, Mahathir today said they have not yet determined a deadline for the MPs to declare their assets.

When asked whether these measures will be enough to stop the lawmakers from engaging in corruption, Mahathir said there is no way for him to know until someone is caught.

"I cannot know whether I have done enough until I find them breaking the law. 

"If they break the law, it means I have not done enough," he said.
