PARLIAMENT | Former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak arrived at the Dewan Rakyat today for the first parliamentary session since the landmark 14th general election.

The sitting is the first in the nation’s history where BN will occupy the opposition bench following its humiliating defeat in the May 9 election.

Dressed in black, Najib smiled, waved and wished the crowd “good morning” as he headed into the hall. The crowd comprised the media and Parliament staff.

His former right-hand man and new Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi arrived shortly after, followed by former youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin, both also dressed in black.

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad arrived in Parliament around 9.53am.

Dressed in a grey suit, he waved at the crowd as he was escorted by bodyguards into the hall. 

He was preceded by Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who made her appearance in the house around the same time as Umno Ketereh MP Annuar Musa. 

Umno Arau MP Shahidan Kassim, meanwhile, arrived in a wheelchair. He was hospitalised a few days after the May 9 polls, and had been admitted several times since.

He has denied rumours that he suffered a mild stroke or the autoimmune disorder Guillain-Barré syndrome.

Amanah Sepang MP Hanipa Maidin was also present at the Dewan Rakyat today. He had collapsed during Mahathir’s monthly speech to the civil service at the Prime Minister’s Office last Monday. 

He was discharged after spending a day at the Putrajaya Hospital.

Najib later told reporters that he has accepted being in the opposition and would work towards becoming a "constructive" opposition.

"I have already accepted (my position as in the opposition).

"To me, I prioritise servicing the rakyat and I want to be a constructive opposition and to play a role in ensuring the smooth execution of our country's healthy democracy," he told reporters after the swearing-in ceremony.
