Free durians raise a stink in Sg Kandis; Zahid as PAC chief?

KINI ROUNDUP | Here are the key headlines you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

Free durians raise a stink in Sg Kandis

Electoral watchdog Bersih slammed as corruption an event by a Selangor government-linked cooperative which offered free durians for Sungai Kandis constituents while featuring the Pakatan Harapan by-election candidate Zawawi Ahmad Mughni from PKR and Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari.

Former premier Najib Abdul Razak campaigned for the BN candidate in the constituency, Lokman Noor Adam, saying the latter was a "brave, authoritative" politician.

Najib, who is also former Umno president, said the freeze on Umno accounts as part of the 1MDB probe will not slow down BN's campaign in Sungai Kandis which goes to the polls on Aug 4.

Meanwhile, PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the party members "were open" to choose any candidate when voting in the constituency.

The Islamist party's central committee member Nik Abduh Nik Aziz, however, cited five reasons as to why he believes his party wants its members to vote for Umno in the by-election.

Zahid as PAC chief?

De facto Law Minister Liew Vui Keong said that opposition leader Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's name was the sole one being considered to chair the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) in Parliament.

Zahid, who is also Umno president, said he made three offers to former party youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin in the party elections last month, including being his running mate for deputy president, but the latter refused all offers.

Meanwhile, Khairy, who is Rembau MP, said after some " tension", he is finally on speaking terms again with Zahid.

During his debate in Dewan Rakyat today, Khairy also urged the Pakatan Harapan government to break two of their promises in their election manifesto for the sake of the country's economy - namely abolishing the GST and the promise to postpone the repayment of PTPTN loans for graduates who earn below RM4,000 per month.
