Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) is in favour of the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) to be comprehensively reviewed as stated by Education Minister Maszlee Malik.

Its board of governors chairperson Mohamed Hatta Shaharom said, however, any decision on the controversial university entry-level certification must take into account Article 152 (1) of the Federal Constitution, National Language Act 1963/67 and the Education Act 1996.

He further called for History to be made a must-pass subject in the UEC, along with Bahasa Malaysia.

"The History subject must be included in a comprehensive holistic review (by the Education Ministry).

"We must take into account Malaysia's best interest. This relates to national unity, as the first issue is the sovereignty of Bahasa Malaysia," he said during a press conference at the DBP headquarters today.

Mohamed Hatta added that he hoped the ministry would also consider DBP's role when determining UEC's course.

He said the DBP was always open to meeting and discussing the matter with the ministry, should it be called to do so.

"I know (the DBP) has yet to be called but we have had informal discussions with the minister's department and with the minister himself.

"We would like to be called (to discuss). We are concerned and will fight for the sovereignty of Bahasa Malaysia as well as the integrity and development of literature," he said.
