K Vasantha Kumar, the founding member of Hindraf and former Internal Security Act (ISA) detainee, will be contesting for the vice president's post in the PKR polls.
Aligning himself to the "Azmin camp", Vasantha said he would also contest for the deputy chairperson for Kapar division in the upcoming party elections.
“The winning combination will be if Anwar Ibrahim contests the president's post and Azmin Ali continues to defend his deputy president's post in the party,” said Vasantha who contested in Tapah’s parliamentary elections in the 13th general election and lost to BN's M Saravanan.
Azmin has yet to announce his candidacy for the upcoming party elections, and it has been a guessing game if he’ll contest the top post or continue to defend his position as the deputy president of PKR.
Anwar-Azmin alliance will be the best combination to strengthen the party which is already seeing disgruntled members leaving the party, he added.
“Azmin has been a key supporter of Anwar and is a founding member of the party. He took to the streets in 1998 and started the 'reformasi' movement when Anwar was removed as deputy prime minister and incarcerated.
“Azmin is seen as the best successor to continue Anwar's reformation agenda. He’s able to bridge the gap between members in the party as well as the Pakatan Harapan coalition.”
In addition, he said, “Azmin brings a wealth of knowledge and experience with him having been Selangor’s menteri besar and now, Minister of Economic Affairs.”
Vasantha explained that Azmin would ease the transition when Anwar takes over as the prime minister in due course.
He will organise a big gathering among PKR’s Indian members nationwide to garner support for the Azmin-Zuraida team on Aug 25 at Dewan Hamzah in Klang.
