Permatang Pauh MP Nurul Izzah Anwar today insisted that she will not be vacating her seat for her father, Anwar Ibrahim.

“Permatang Pauh is my cinta abadi (eternal love).

“I think I’m going to be committed to my eternal love until my term ends,” Nurul Izzah told reporters at the Parliament lobby.

Earlier today, Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail also denied she would vacate Pandan for her husband, Anwar.

“Memang tak (definitely not),” she said. 

When stumping for Mohd Zawawi Ahmad Mughni in the Sungai Kandis by-election last week, Anwar had hinted at his return to Parliament.

"There is a vacant seat in Sungai Kandis, there is a vacant seat in Balakong, and there's a vacancy in Parliament because I want to contest," said the new PKR president.

The Permatang Pauh seat has become synonymous with Anwar, having served as MP for four consecutive terms before being removed as deputy prime minister and jailed for sodomy.

After founding PKR, he won the seat again in the 2008 and 2013 elections before his second sodomy conviction.

'Party is behind Anwar'

With Anwar winning the PKR presidency uncontested yesterday, PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali said this was proof that the party was fully behind him.

“This shows that party members want to see Anwar be given a bigger role to play in leading the party, especially when PKR is the biggest Pakatan Harapan bloc in Parliament today.

“His leadership will be utilised,” he told reporters today.

When asked of his take on his chances of defending his deputy president post against long-time rival Rafizi Ramli, Azmin quipped he would “leave it to the wisdom of my members.”
