PARLIAMENT | Works Minister Baru Bian has confirmed that the Pakatan Harapan government will postpone the abolition of tolls until it is more financially viable to do so.

"After considering some factors, the government has decided to postpone the abolition of tolls until the economic situation in the country has stabilised," Baru said during the Question-and-Answer session in Parliament today.

He was responding to Jalaluddin Alias (BN-Jelebu), who had asked the minister to state the latest list of tolls that will be abolished, as well as when this would be done.

Baru said one of the main issues with abolishing tolls is that it would cost more than RM400 billion to do so.

When Jalaluddin further questioned why Pakatan Harapan made such a promise if it was not financially feasible, Baru said they previously did not know the full extent of the country's financial situation.

"As I said, we have examined the status of the country's finances, which we did not know before.

"After we took over the government, we found out the real situation of the country's finances, which is why we have to re-examine this again," he said.

The government intends to fulfil the promise, Baru added, but as it wants to be a responsible government, it has decided to postpone the abolition of tolls until the economy is more stable.

Pakatan Harapan had promised in its election manifesto to get rid of tolls in Malaysia.
