PARLIAMENT | A motion by the Pakatan Harapan government to have the Auditor-General's Department and Public Accounts Committee reopen the 1MDB investigation was unanimously approved by the Dewan Rakyat.

This included MPs from BN, who had during the previous Parliament session, stifled debate or questions about the scandal.

The motion was brought by Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng, who stressed that the investigations can provide closure for the country.

Annuar Musa (BN-Kertereh) who debated the motion, expressed his support for the motion.

"I would like to thank the government and minister for tabling this motion.

"As MPs, we only wish to seek the truth and not shield or protect anyone. If we do the latter, it is against the oath we have taken," he said.

Annuar even urged the government to expedite the 1MDB investigation and prosecution.

"There has yet to be any prosecution that is specific to 1MDB, we are still engaging in polemics.

"I support this motion and I hope the government will expedite (the investigations)," he said.

Annuar (photo) also voiced support for the subsequent PAC hearings on the new 1MDB investigations to be open to the public.

Meanwhile, Ahmad Marzuk Shaary (PAS-Pengkalan Chepa) also voiced support for the motion.

"I would like to state that PAS welcomes and state my support for the motion tabled by the minister as it is a matter of public interest," he said.

Ahmad Marzuk then went on to ask about the status of the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) on the forex scandal but Dewan Rakyat speaker Mohd Ariff Md Yusof reined him in, stating that he had strayed from the topic.

Lim, in his winding-up speech, thanked MPs for the unanimous support.

"I appreciate the support from all MPs even though we are from different parties. At least, we can speak with one voice.

"In the past, the other side (BN) would not agree with us. This was only made possible through change (of government) and I thank the people for choosing change," he said.

Earlier, Wong Kah Woh (Harapan-Ipoh Timur) had proposed that the Dewan Rakyat speaker use his power to suspend Standing Order 85, which prevents the PAC proceedings from being made public prior to the publication of its report.

However, Ariff suggested that the new PAC convene its meeting and formally decide to bring the matter to the Dewan Rakyat.
