PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar has objected to the government's decision to appoint former inspector-general of police Abdul Rahim Noor as the new facilitator for the Southern Thai peace process.

Taking to Twitter, she described Rahim as a "brutal assaulter of an innocent man."

"I unequivocally oppose this appointment of a brutal assaulter of an innocent man, as he lay there blindfolded and handcuffed – left without medical attention for days.

"This being then lied to the whole world as to the victim’s whereabouts and well-being. Shame on those who executed this travesty," Nurul Izzah added.

She was referring to her father Anwar Ibrahim, who was assaulted in police custody following his sacking as deputy prime minister in 1998, which left him with the infamous black eye.

Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who was prime minister at the time, initially suggested that the injury could have been self-inflicted, but a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) later found that Rahim had assaulted him.

Rahim, 75, replaces Ahmad Zamzamin Hashim as the new facilitator for the Southern Thai peace talk process between the Thai government and Mara Pattani group.

Responding to Nurul Izzah, Bersatu strategist Rais Hussin said agreed with her.

“We must all be with her on this. The government must undo this appointment immediately,” Rais tweeted.

Earlier, Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin described the former IGP's appointment as a “black eye” for Malaysia.

“I may be on the other side, but show some respect to your incoming prime minister,” Khairy tweeted in reference to Pakatan Harapan agreeing that Anwar would replace Mahathir as prime minister.

“Heartless and despicable. True to Palpatine form,” he tweeted.
