Pakatan Harapan MPs will have to submit their asset declarations to Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and MACC by mid-October.

Malaysiakini understands that the MPs were informed about this through a letter as well as during a briefing at the MACC headquarters.

The lawmakers were asked to submit their asset declarations within three months after the swearing-in ceremony which took place on July 16.

They purportedly have to fill in a thorough asset declaration form, which includes details about one's spouse, dependents and proxies as well as information about assets such as the date of purchase, the value at the time of purchase, its current value and how it was paid for.

Several Harapan lawmakers confirmed this with Malaysiakini including Bandar Kuching MP Kelvin Yii, Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil and Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng (photo).

Fahmi said he recalled being informed about this at a closed-door briefing at the MACC headquarters in July.

This briefing had taken place shortly after Mahathir announced that all lawmakers from the ruling party, including cabinet ministers, will have to declare their assets to MACC.

Lim, meanwhile, said he had no qualms about declaring his assets but urged the new government to also probe the wealth of the current opposition.

“They came to Parliament in their big cars, chauffeur-driven, helpers and whatnot.

“So I want the government to investigate their wealth, whether it tallies with their income or whether they have declared sufficient income tax.

“I don't have a problem declaring my assets but wouldn't it be fair for the government to also investigate the wealth of the previous MPs and cabinet ministers?" he said.

The asset declaration is in line with the government’s efforts to combat corruption and be more transparent.

Certain quarters such as PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli, however, have called for the declarations to be made public.
