PAS MUKTAMAR | PAS must be the "lifebuoy" to save Umno from evil ways, party deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said today.

Speaking at the winding up of PAS' 64th muktamar, Tuan Ibrahim told the party delegates to address the concerns raised by some members over the party cooperating with Umno of late.

"Some PAS members are worried about our cooperation with Umno... They said that we should not be the pelampung (lifebuoy) for those who had been committing corruption, doing evil deeds.

"But let me tell you, we must be their pelampung. The pelampung of Islam is the one that can save them.

"We will bring them closer, save them for this world and the afterlife," he said. 

Tuan Ibrahim's remarks came following grouses by PAS members over PAS-Umno collaboration, which the parties established recently after Umno became an opposition following its defeat in the 14th general election.

The two parties had been enemies since they went separate ways after PAS was ejected from Umno-led BN coalition in 1977.

PAS and Umno were seen to become closer after the Islamist party left the now-defunct Pakatan Rakyat coalition, creating rumours that they might join forces to face the last general election.

PAS top leaders then had maintained that it would not cooperate with Umno in going for the election. It made true of the promises when PAS placed its candidates against Umno.

However, the situation changed recently, with both parties supporting each other in recent Sungai Kandis and Seri Setia by-elections.
