Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said Umno will remain in Sabah and will be given autonomy.

Zahid said that he would on touch on the request by Sabah for autonomy in his policy speech at Umno general assembly on Sept 29, before it is put to the supreme council for endorsement.

He said the matter would also be brought up at an extraordinary general meeting to enable amendments to be made to the party constitution to facilitate the matter.

“We will have to formalise it by hold an EGM and amend the party constitution to include Sabah Umno's demands. This will give legality to the autonomy powers of Sabah Umno,” he said.

Zahid also stated that he would also address the matter of Sabah Umno wanting to tie up with other opposition parties in the state in his policy address at the general assembly,

Zahid was speaking to reporters after holding a meeting with Sabah leaders at the Umno Building in Kota Kinabalu today.

Meanwhile, Sabah Umno chief Hajiji Noor said the branch welcomed the gesture, adding that it would "localise" Umno in the state.

"This is the result of Sabah Umno struggle to reinvent itself," the Sulaman assemblyperson said in a statement.

Hajiji added that the move would also negate the perception among Sabahans that Sabah Umno was a Malayan party.

Meanwhile in Johor Bahru, state Umno chief Hasni Mohammad said the branch will be tabling three proposals at the general assembly this Saturday to check the “budaya bolot” (grab everything culture) in the party.

These are that the president need not necessarily be prime minister; Umno leaders need not be elected representatives or a must that they must be candidates in elections and thirdly, set up a leadership institute to produce good leaders.

He added that if implemented, Johor Umno believed the party would be re-accepted by the people.
