Nazri: Dr M just wants to find, recover 1MDB money

The probe against, and prosecutions of Umno/BN leaders and several other individuals by the Pakatan Harapan administration are the government's efforts to recover funds misappropriated from 1MDB, said Padang Rengas MP Nazri Aziz.

"Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad just wants to unravel and find 1MDB funds which have been misappropriated.

"The investigation and prosecution against Umno leaders and other individuals are just aimed at detecting and finding the 'money trail' from the scandal.

"The prime minister just wants to find out where the funds have gone to.

"We can see [...] as it is not only BN leaders who are arrested, it also includes other individuals suspected to be linked to 1MDB," the BN secretary-general told reporters in Parliament today.

Nazri was responding to a question on Mahathir's remark last week that more BN leaders would be hauled to court - one by one, for wrongdoing during the BN administration.

This was an about-turn from Nazri's previous critical stance of Mahathir.

In September last year, Nazri had dared Mahathir to contest against him in Padang Rengas, instead of Langkawi or Putrajaya in the 14th general election, where the nonagenarian was touted to contest.

In April this year, after Mahathir was announced as the Langkawi candidate, Nazri had said that he will not be able to do much for the constituency's development, even if he won the parliamentary seat.

This is because Mahathir was with the (then) opposition, and could not contribute much without the federal government's backing, Nazri had said, under the assumption that BN would retain Putrajaya in GE14.

Nazri had also said that the wealth of Mahathir's family should be scrutinised.

The Harapan administration has seen a slew of BN -particularly Umno-related - prosecutions since it took over federal power on May 9.

Najib has been slapped with 38 charges of money laundering, criminal breach of trust - related to the 1MDB scandal, among others, while his wife Rosmah Mansor, also faces 17 charges of money laundering and failing to declare income.

Najib's former deputy Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has also been slapped with 45 charges of money laundering, criminal breach of trust, and receiving gratification, while former treasury secretary-general Irwan Serigar also faces six joint charges of criminal breach of trust, with Najib.
