Former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak has questioned the viability of the cryptocurrency Harapan Coin which was mooted by Federal Territories Minister Khalid Samad.

"Harapan Coin? Such creative ideas from the Pakatan Harapan leaders lately.

"All creatures and living things in this universe would lose to them.

"I checked the website and it said it has the potential to be the official currency if Harapan wins the election.

"The explanation section is also full of rhetoric and baseless justification," Najib said in a Facebook posting tonight.

Previously, Khalid had said he would propose Harapan Coin, a form of cryptocurrency which uses blockchain technology, to Bank Negara Malaysia and Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

He also said the cryptocurrency would be able to be used for government transactions such as license fees, payment of summonses and many others.

Najib said it was "bizarre" that Khalid was so insistent on pushing this initiative.

"He wants this so badly. Why? Who is truly benefitting from such a scheme?

"I am also very worried with Khalid's statement that the Harapan Coin can also be used in transactions with the government... what is his agenda here?

"Weird things which raises concerns such as FundMyHome and Harapan Coin are getting more attention from the Harapan government. The rakyat's wellbeing is not being upheld," Najib said.

He also questioned whether Bank Negara will approve of Harapan Coin and recognise it as official currency.

Najib had also previously criticised the property crowdfunding scheme FundMyHome, saying that he was angered by it.
