The flood situation in Malacca is improving with some evacuees having returned to their homes, leaving 987 victims from 274 families at the relief centres at noon today from 1,081 people (302 families) this morning.

Malacca Malaysia Civil Defence Force director Effendy Ali said while the relief centre at Balai Raya Seri Jeram in Alor Gajah was closed at about noon today, a new one was opened at Jawatankuasa Penyelaras Dewan Undangan Negeri (Japerun) Durian Tunggal building.

He said Alor Gajah district still had the most number of flood victims, totalling 857 people, with 150 of them still at Sekolah Rendah Agama Jabatan Agama Islam Melaka (Jaim) Jelatang, Balai Raya Kampung Gadek (13 people) and SK Lesung Batu (205 people).

"Other flood victims in Alor Gajah are being accommodated at Sekolah Tahfiz Panchor (102 people), Balai Raya Kampung Beringin (75 people) , SK Belimbing Dalam (284 people) and Japerun Durian Tunggal (28 people).

"A total of 130 evacuees are still at Balai Raya Kampung Tanah Merah, Krubong in the Melaka Tengah district," he said in a statement today.

Effendy is also the Malacca Disaster Management Committee chief secretariat.
