Police shoot dead five of six men in KL robbery

The police shot dead five of six men who staged a robbery at a goldsmith shop at a hypermarket in Kuchai Lama, Kuala Lumpur today and caught the sixth robber.

One policeman was injured in the incident which happened at about 4.30 pm, said Selangor CID chief SAC Fadzil Ahmat.

He said four of the robbers were shot dead at the scene while one was shot dead about 400 metres away after he fled in a car.

Fadzil said the six men rushed into the hypermarket brandishing pistols, axes and machetes and headed straight to the goldsmith shop.

He said on making their escape, they were confronted by a patrol team operating in the area.

“The patrol team rushed to the scene after receiving a tip-off from the public that there were several suspicious individuals who donned motorcycle safety helmets while in a car in the vicinity of the hypermarket.

“A shoot-out ensued with four of the suspects shot dead at the location while the fifth who tried to escape in a car was shot about 400 metres away,” he told reporters at the scene.

One of the robbers was arrested, he said.

Fadzil also said that the injured policeman took a shot in the incident and is receiving treatment at the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre.

“He is reported to be in stable condition,” he said.

The police recovered two pistols, machetes, an axe as well as a large quantity of jewellery, he said, adding that two cars - a Perodua Myvi and Mercedes - used by the suspects were also seized.

Meanwhile, a 26-year-old eyewitness who wished to be known only as Diah said he saw several men wearing crash helmets dash into the goldsmith shop.

“Then I heard gunshots and ran away for my own safety,” he said.
