Bersatu is set to become the next major peninsula-based political party to spread its wings to Sarawak on Dec 1.

Prime Minister and Bersatu chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad is scheduled to attend the launch of Sarawak Bersatu in Bintulu.

With this launch, it would mean Bersatu would have presence in every territory in the country, except Sabah.

In the past, there were efforts to set up Umno in Sarawak, but its splinter party Bersatu now looks set to do so first.

Bersatu's entry into Sarawak will also mean that Pakatan Harapan is now finally fully represented in the state.

The 2016 state election saw Harapan fielding candidates from PKR, DAP and Amanah only.

During that election, Sarawak BN won 72 seats in the newly expanded 82-seat legislative assembly.

Elections have to be called, at the latest, by 2021.

Sarawak BN has now broken off from the coalition and formed its own pact known as Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS).

GPS and its previous incarnations have been ruling Sarawak since 1974.
