Group arrested near temple

Police arrested a group of youths near the near the Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in Subang Jaya, after they failed to heed orders to disperse.

 This came after two consecutive nights of violence near the temple. Deputy inspector-general of police Noor Rashid Ibrahim vowed to double the police presence near the temple and crack down on any sign of gatherings near it.

Prior to that, police had arrested 21 people in relation to incidents in and around the temple, of whom 19 were remanded.

Meanwhile, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department P Waythamoorthy said that following discussions with Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, the federal government and Selangor government have promised that the temple would not be demolished until a final solution is found.

Injured firefighter fighting for his life

The 24-year old firefighter Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim was left severely injured at the scene of yesterday morning’s fracas near the temple, where he was dragged out of his vehicle and beaten by a mob while responding to a blaze. He was planning to get married next month, but instead landed in the intensive care unit.

Fire and Rescue Department director-general Mohammad Hamdan Wahid said no police were around when the incident occurred, while inspector-general of police Mohamed Fuzi Harun said police could not be everywhere.

Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin said the firefighter has been transferred from a private hospital to the National Heart Institute (IJN), in the hope that specialised machine could pump more oxygen into his punctured lungs and speed recovery.
