1MDB scandal will be written in M'sian history, says Maszlee
PARLIAMENT | The 1MDB scandal will be recorded as part of Malaysian history so that the country will not repeat the same mistake in future, Education Minister Maszlee Malik said.

Maszlee, who was speaking on his ministry's efforts in revising the History subject in school, did not say if the 1MDB scandal would end up in the school curriculum.
This was in response to Ahmad Maslan (BN-Pontian), who said that past mistakes are bound to be repeated if they are not taught as part of history.
"So, I wish to know how many private schools take up History as a subject, as done by the 60 Chinese Independent High Schools? What are the topics and historical facts that turned into controversial (issues) in the country ?" Ahmad asked.

After hearing Maszlee's reply, Ahmad stood up and interjected: " (How about) the RM30 billion lost in the forex (trading) ?"
The Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) into Bank Negara Malaysia's forex trading, which was set up by the previous administration, had suggested Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamand, PKR president Anwar Ibrahim and former Bank Negara advisor Nor Mohamed Yakcop, to be principally liable to criminal breach of trust.
In his reply earlier, Maszlee cited former UK prime minister Winston Churchill's "history is written by the victors" quote, in justifying the government's effort to improve history syllabus.
"The Education Ministry has taken into consideration Winston Churchill's saying. The change of the historical landscape has brought a huge change in the mindset in the forming of a new narrative for history," he said.
With this, he said, the education ministry will set up a committee to improve curriculum and history textbook.
"We will engage with historians in talks to get a perspective of history with a fresher narrative," he said.
