3,000 Umno Youth members to provide security at anti-Icerd rally

Umno Youth will act as security during this Saturday's rally against the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (Icerd).

Secretary-general Annuar Musa said 3,000 members of the youth wing will be acting as security, together with PAS' Unit Amal.

"We (Umno) are just attending, we are not the organiser, we are only supporting and mobilising our members.

"But Umno Youth has allocated a few thousand people to coordinate (security), about 3,000 of them... They will cooperate with the police," Annuar told reporters when met in Parliament today.

Earlier, PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said Unit Amal will provide some 1,000 members for security.

Tuan Ibrahim said it was his desire for the rally to proceed peacefully, and urged the police to act against any provocateurs.

The rally – organised by several Muslim NGOs, and backed by Umno and PAS – received the go-ahead from police and the Kuala Lumpur City Hall yesterday. 

It will be confined to Jalan Raja, in front of the Sultan Abdul Samad Building and Dataran Merdeka.

Originally planned as a protest to pressure the government against ratifying Icerd, the rally has instead be dubbed a "celebration" of Putrajaya's move to spike the treaty.
