Police have advised Suhakam to postpone its event to commemorate the International Human Rights Day tomorrow, according to government sources.
Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad was scheduled to be the chief guest at the event to be held in Padang Timur, Petaling Jaya.
“We are waiting for the cabinet meeting later and a final decision on this matter. We may have to postpone it,” a source told Malaysiakini.
Meanwhile, a police source confirmed that approval for the Suhakam event has been retracted.
In a media statement later, Suhakam chairperson Razali Ismail confirmed that the event would be postponed.
Expressing regret and disappointment, he said the police had cited security risks.
The Suhakam event would have coincided with another mammoth gathering, which is scheduled to take place some 10km from Padang Timur.
Tens of thousands are expected to attend the gathering in Kuala Lumpur tomorrow on the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (Icerd).
Organised by a several Malay-Muslim NGOs, the gathering is also supported by PAS and Umno.
Previously, PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan said that a turnout of half a million is expected.
The gathering was initially mooted to protest the possible ratification of Icerd, but following the government's decision not to ratify the convention, the gathering has now turned into a celebration.
