The Teoh Beng Hock Trust for Democracy today gave police an enlarged cardboard version of a letter sent in July 2018 by the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) to inspector-general of police Mohamad Fuzi Harun, to remind him of the order to re-open a probe into the political aide’s death.

One of the trust's representatives Ng Yap Hwa said that Fuzi had earlier claimed that there had been no word from the AGC to reopen the investigation.

"They (the police) said they didn't receive any notice from the AGC, and we printed it (the letter) out today in A1 size, to remind them that the AGC had released a notification to ask them to reopen the investigation," he said.

In July 2018, Fuzi had told reporters that the police had received instructions from the AGC to re-open Teoh's case.

However, in October, he was reported as saying that police had yet to receive orders from AGC to re-open the investigation.

Ng later passed the oversized letter to Bukit Aman’s corporate communications chief, Faizal Samsuddin at the police headquarters, and said it was a gift to the police.

The trust's representatives also submitted a memorandum today to the police and gave the police two months to complete a reinvestigation of former DAP political aide Teoh Beng Hock's death.

The group's secretary Ngeow Chow Ying, together with seven other representatives, submitted the memorandum, which was addressed to the IGP, to his representative Faizal. 

"We demand no more delay in the investigation, the police should start the new probe immediately and complete the task within two months," Ngeow said during the memorandum’s submission.

On July 16, 2009, Teoh was found dead after falling nine floors from MACC's former Selangor headquarters in Shah Alam, where he had been held overnight for questioning. The deceased was the political aide to Seri Kembangan assemblyperson Ean Yong Hian Wah.

According to the Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng, the cabinet had agreed to re-open investigations into Teoh’s death in June 2018.

However, Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin had said in October last year that the police were still awaiting orders to reopen the probe into Teoh’s death, three months after the cabinet's decision was made.

Two months given to complete probe

"We know that the AG has sent a letter to the IGP seven months ago to look into this case again, in fact, to reinvestigate Teoh Beng Hock's death.

“But we have given so much time, it's seven months already, and we still have no news and no update about the investigation.

"That is the reason why we are here today, to remind him that there is a job not done yet and we are all waiting for justice for Teoh Beng Hock, " said Ngeow during a press conference held after the memorandum’s submission.

"We are happy that officer Faizal accepted our memo. We give them two months to complete the investigations and we are expecting that as a responsible government and police force, they should at least give us, the family, Malaysians an answer," she added.

She also urged the government to set up a new special task force comprising the police, AGC, National Human Rights Commission (Suhakam), Bar Council, Court of Appeal judge Hamid Sultan Abu Backer, and law academic Azmi Sharom to investigate Teoh's death.
