Bridge crash: Family asks to stop sharing victim's picture
The family of Moey Yun Peng has asked the public to stop sharing pictures of his body on social media.
"We hope the public can stop speculating on the accident and stop sharing the pictures.
"We want to remember him as the handsome and cheerful boy and cherish the nice moments we had with him," a family member was quoted as saying by The Star Online.
Moey was killed after another vehicle hit his SUV on the Penang Bridge, causing him to lose control and plunging into the Penang Strait.
It took search and rescue teams three days to locate and lift the vehicle out of the water due to challenging conditions.
Moey's bloated body was found in the driver seat when the vehicle was lifted out of the water.
The 20-year-old's funeral will take place on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the driver who hit Moey's vehicle has been arrested, according to Sin Chew Daily.
The report said the driver surrendered himself at the Seberang Perai Tengah district police headquarters at 2am today.
Police said the case was being investigated under Section 41 of the Road Transport Act 1987 which concerns causing death by reckless and dangerous driving.
The driver faces a jail term of two to 10 years and a fine of RM5,000 to RM20,000.
According to a dashcam recording of the incident, the speeding driver had swerved into the slow lane to overtake a vehicle, but lost control.
He then hit Moey's SUV, which also caused the latter's vehicle to lose control and fall off the bridge.
Middle lane hogging is an epidemic problem in Malaysia. But in the case of this accident, it is obvious from the dashcam recording that the Vios driver was driving recklessly and appears to be racing with the Mazda CX5 driver. Both vehicles were traveling excessively faster than the other vehicles on the bridge. The Vios driver weaved to the left at high speed between the Wira in the middle lane and the dashcam vehicle in the left lane, and then tried to turn back to the middle lane but oversteered and veered toward the CX5. The front right of the Vios hit the back left of the CX5, causing the CX5 to veer to the left, heading towards the side of the bridge. At the same time, the Vios flipped the CX5 upside down and cause the CX5 to spin anti clockwise such that the front of the CX5 was facing oncoming traffic (you can see the CX5’s headlights shining into the dashcam). The right side of the upside down CX5 hit the bridge guardrail, and due to the centre of gravity of the CX5 being higher since the vehicle was upside down, the momentum of the CX5 caused it to roll over the guardrail and fall into the sea. If the CX5 had not rolled over in the first place, it probably wouldn’t have rolled over the guardrail.
I agree with Anonymous_1540348819. It is high time the police and JPJ take action against road hoggers. These drivers are a hazard to other drivers.
Yes, we should.respect Moey's family's wishes. Those images should not have been shared in the first instance. But.since they are already in cyber space, we can.do our part by making sure the pics & video end with ua.
