The Conference of Rulers has elected Pahang's Sultan Abdullah Ahmad Shah as the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

"The Conference of Rulers has a made a decision. The Sultan of Pahang will be the next Yang di-Pertuan Agong,” a high-ranking source close to Istana Negara told Malaysiakini.

The source also said the rulers decided that Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Shah would reign as the Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

Sultan Abdullah, 59, had succeeded his father Sultan Ahmad Shah as the ruler of Pahang on Jan 12.

Sultan Ahmad, 88, is currently undergoing intensive treatment at the National Heart Institute (IJN) in Kuala Lumpur.

In a statement later, Keeper of the Rulers' Seal Syed Danial Syed Ahmad confirmed that Sultan Abdullah would ascend the throne and his five-year reign would begin on Jan 31.

Syed Danial said that in accordance with Paragraph 3, Part I of the Third Schedule of the Federal Constitution, the decision of the Conference of Rulers had been conveyed to both Houses of Parliament.

“The prime minister has also been informed,” he added.

The special meeting of the Conference of Rulers at the Istana Negara in Kuala Lumpur this morning was chaired by the Sultan of Terengganu Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin.

Eight of the nine rulers were present.

Kelantan's Sultan Muhammad V, who stepped down as the 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong on Jan 6, did not attend.

Previously, it was speculated that Johor ruler Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar might be proclaimed as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong due to Sultan Ahmad's poor health.

According to the rotation system of the rulers, the Sultan of Pahang is to become the Yang di-Pertuan Agong after the Kelantan ruler's reign ends in 2021.

The Johor ruler is next in line to the Sultan of Pahang.
