Ministers do have own WhatsApp group, says Muhyiddin

Cabinet members do have their own WhatsApp group, said Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

He told this to reporters this afternoon in response to former premier Najib Abdul Razak's cynical claim that the Pakatan Harapan ministers do not communicate with each other.

Najib had a few hours ago posted on his Facebook account ridiculing Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng who reportedly said he was shocked over Economic Affairs Minister Azmin Ali's announcement that the cabinet had decided to cancel the RM81 billion East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project.

“It's true, they don't have a WhatsApp group. But the telephone has been around since 1876," Najib said in his post.

When asked for his response, Muhyiddin said: "We WhatsApp alot."

"We do have (group for cabinet members)," he said when asked again at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.

The Bersatu president was attending the launch of Harapan Youth chief Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad's book titled '9 Mei 2018 - Dari Garis Depan'.

However, Muhyiddin declined to comment on the cabinet meeting on Thursday, where the decision on ECRL was allegedly made.

He said he would leave it to the ministers responsible for the matter, and believed that there would be an official statement issued soon.

"To avoid more confusion, it would be the right thing for us to not make any more comments.

"I leave this to the minister in charge. The two ministries are related... I leave it to them to decide," he said.

Muhyiddin also said that it would be better for the government not to make conflicting statements.

"Especially if (the conflicting statements) come from members of the cabinet. I am speaking as someone who had been a veteran minister in the previous government," he said.

"I hope there won't be other quarters issuing (further) statements saying this and that. We take one stand... the government will issue an official statement.

"It does not matter who (issues the statement). That will make everything clear on the decision."

This morning, Azmin told reporters that the cabinet in a meeting on Thursday had decided to cancel the ECRL project due to the high annual interest.

However, Lim had in another press conference later expressed his shock over Azmin's announcement, saying that Azmin might have not been informed of certain matters previously decided by Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
