Too early for unity gov't plans with Umno, says PAS veep

A senior PAS leader today downplayed acting Umno president Mohamad Hasan's reported plans to form a unity government in the four states currently governed by BN and PAS.
PAS vice-president Iskandar Samad told reporters today it is "too early" for the two parties to discuss such a proposal, as preparations are being made to face the upcoming Rantau by-election.
"We have just cooperated at the level of by-elections. We haven't discussed anything further.
"This is too early. It is still very far ahead. We have not discussed it," he said, after attending a national unity seminar organised by the non-Muslim PAS Supporters Congress (DHPP) in Kuala Lumpur.
"We had discussed cooperation for two by-elections, and now we will go to Rantau, so let's focus on winning in Rantau," he added.
Mohamad reportedly said yesterday that a working committee had been formed by Umno to coordinate the plan involving the governments in Pahang, Perlis, Kelantan and Terengganu, together with a committee to be formed by PAS.
PAS syura council secretary Nik Mohamad Zawawi Nik Salleh (photo), who earlier delivered the seminar's closing address, was quick to add that there was nothing wrong with Mohamad's statement.
"Because when he (Mohamad) mentioned a unity government between PAS and Umno, we in the syura council discussed it, and decided that any cooperation with other political parties that we view as not being a threat to the foundation of our struggle will be accepted.
"So with the current issue that we have now, if he had said that, it is a view that does not contradict with PAS' own.
"That is an early indication," said the Pasir Puteh MP.
Earlier this week, PAS had formalised its ties with Umno, following BN's victory in the Semenyih by-election.
The win largely attributed to the parties' success in uniting the Malay voters.
It seems the PAS taliban is not willing to share power with Umno taliban. They are more interested in stealing each other vote bank. So much for the so-called 'cooperation for race and religion'.
