PAS members once prayed for Umno’s downfall and the prayers were eventually answered, said party vice-president Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah (above).

Now that Umno is on its knees, PAS is in a dilemma on whether to help its former rival, he said.

“After we prayed day and night for mampus Umno (the destruction of Umno), Umno fell. God answered our prayers when BN fell, which had Umno at its core.

“Although we didn’t take the federal government, our prayers and efforts were realised,” he said last night during the Pengkalan Chepa PAS division annual general meeting.

However, after Umno was no longer in power, he said PAS felt pity for the party.

“When Umno fell, they fell in front of us. Even if we wanted to kick them, we pity them because they had fallen. Helping them up (would feel odd) because we wanted them to fall.

“They are sitting there asking for (us) to help them up. It’s pitiful. This is the dilemma we are in now,” Amar said.

Big decision

PAS now has to make a big decision on its relationship with Umno and the party’s leadership would have a lot to ponder.

“We don’t look at what’s in front of us. We have to think about five or 10 years from now. Whatever decision we make now will affect us five years later.

“We have a complicated decision to make. That's why we need to discuss it.

“Firstly, our leaders won’t make a hasty decision. Secondly, we will consider all angles,” Amar said.

He added that any decision made by the leadership will ensure that it is compliant with the laws of Islam, and party members must support it.

“Any decision we make will be in the interest of Islam. We don’t think about what happens to the party or leaders. What is important is what happens to Islam,” he said.

Previously, Amar had dismissed suggestions that Umno and PAS were now “married”, following the formation of a technical committee on election campaigning.

PAS leaders have also brushed off suggestions that Umno and PAS should form unity governments in Perlis, Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan.
