Mosques nationwide have been asked to hold funeral prayers for slain Malaysian teenager Muhammad Haziq Mohd Tarmizi after Friday prayers tomorrow.

The call was made by de facto Religious Affairs Minister Mujahid Yusof Rawa in a statement today, following Wisma Putra's confirmation that Haziq was killed in last Friday's terrorist attack in New Zealand.

"May Allah bless the late Haziq's soul and place him among the faithful," a statement from the minister's office read.

Haziq, 17, was one of 50 people killed after an Australian shooter opened fire on two mosques in Christchurch.

Three other Malaysians were hurt in the attack, including Haziq's father Mohd Tarmizi Shuib.

Mujahid will be flying to New Zealand this evening, and is expected to arrive in Christchurch tomorrow where he will be meeting with the teenager's family.

His office said the minister will also deliver a Friday sermon at one of the mosques targeted in last week's attack.
