Tighten belts till national debt paid off, Dr M to gov't servants
Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad today advised government servants to tighten their belts as the government is working hard to reduce the national debt incurred by the previous BN administration.
Mahathir said this when addressing participants at a Cuepacs event held at the Universiti Putra Malaysia in Serdang today.

"Ladies and gentlemen, I hope we can be patient. Today we have managed to reduce the debt. But to eliminate debt as huge as RM1 trillion, it is not easy.
"All the government employees have to tighten their belts for a while, while we pay off the debt. We can spend (the money) after we clear the debt," he said.
He reiterated that the previous government had accumulated a mountain of debts, putting the country's finances in a difficult situation.
"That is why we need to cancel many of the projects scheduled by the previous government […] today we are RM1 trillion in debt. If we owe money and we can't pay, we will be bankrupt.
"We will try to not repeat the bad things which have happened to this country," he said.
Mahathir added he was confident that Cuepacs members will be patient and work together to heal the country's economic situation.
"We are confident that in three years time, if there is no retaliation, we will be able to fix the country's economy," he said.
Cuepacs, the Congress of Unions of Employees in Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs), is the umbrella body for various unions representing public sector employees.
