Anwar: Give Mahathir time to decide on PAC chief

PKR president Anwar Ibrahim has urged for Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad to be given time to decide on the position of Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chairperson.

"We understand the issue but we should give time because the prime minister is still in Langkawi and I think there needs to be a discussion amongst Pakatan Harapan," he said.

Mahathir had said he will consider returning the PAC chairperson post to the opposition following pressure from Pakatan Harapan MPs, who said it was their electoral promise to do so.

However, he has yet to give a firm commitment.

Beluran MP Ronald Kiandee was appointed to head the PAC in August last year. He was then an Umno MP.

However, Kiandee defected from Umno to Bersatu in March this year.

The opposition has since demanded that Kiandee resign to make way for a new opposition representative.

Mahathir had previously said Kiandee would retain the position before reversing his position.

Asked who would be a suitable candidate to succeed Kiandee, Anwar joked that he could do it.

On a more serious note, he said it was up to the PAC to deliberate.

"The position of the (Harapan) manifesto is quite clear that it should be held by an opposition member," he said.
