RANTAU POLLS | Former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak has been invited to visit the Sendayan township, as part of Umno acting president Mohamad Hasan's campaign for the Rantau by-election.
Mohamad said it was thanks to Najib that Sendayan was developed, after 1MDB bought nearby land from the Negeri Sembilan state government to build an airforce base.
"If there was no aid from the federal government, especially from Najib, Sendayan would not be as developed as it is now - that is (with Putrajaya's) help to buy (Sendayan) land through 1MDB," Mohamad said.
1MDB had acquired the Sendayan land to facilitate the transfer of the air force base in Sungai Besi, which the strategic development firm had bought to develop Bandar Malaysia.
Mohamad said the issues surrounding Najib, including the 1MDB scandal and his RM1.5 billion bill from the Inland Revenue Board, is unlikely to affect BN's chances in Rantau.
"The people of Rantau don't care about 1MDB. They don't even know if it's an onion or a potato.
"What they care about is that they find it hard to buy things now because they don't have funds," he said.
He claimed that many welfare recipients in Rantau are no longer receiving aid.
He said if he remains the Rantau assemblyperson, he will be seeking answers as to how many Social Welfare Department aid recipients have stopped receiving aid and why.
