Six states have agreed to increase water tariffs in their respective states, announced Water, Land and Natural Resources Minister Xavier Jayakumar.
"I am delighted to announce today that six states have agreed to increase their water tariffs.
“Consultations are continuing, and another two states will soon agree to increase their water tariffs," he told the Dewan Rakyat during a question-and-answer session today.
Xavier did not specify which states he was referring to.
The minister had been reported as saying previously that the water hike is necessary to improve the water industry and services nationwide.
Xavier had said the government will ensure the price increase will not burden the people.
Meanwhile, he also said the ministry has no plan to set a ceiling price for water in every state.
"In the context of Malaysia, this is difficult to implement because the costs of water treatment and distribution are different in each state," he said, adding the costs would usually increase every year.
