Finding himself at the helm of the nation again 23 years later, the nonagenarian launched 5G Malaysia, which is a showcase of the next generation in communication networking, this evening.
So what's next? "Human teleportation," he quipped at the event in Putrajaya.
The premier, who turns 94 this year, was responding to a question from a hologram of Aisyah, who co-starred with him in an emotional video about Malaysia in the lead-up to the 14th general election last year.
Earlier in his speech, Mahathir said 5G would not only be good for businesses, but also ensure quality education by "connecting the unconnected" in rural areas, and move teaching beyond the confines of a classroom.
The 5G Malaysia launch coincides with a pilot test phase of 5G technology in Putrajaya.
Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo said the test phase will last six months, after which the National 5G Taskforce will review the pilot project to decide how to move forward with 5G implementation nationwide.
In the meantime, he said the government will push ahead with the national fibrerisation plan, to improve Internet speed in areas that still use copper-based broadband.
