SANDAKAN POLLS | BN has decided not to field a candidate for the Sandakan by-election which is set to take place on May 11.
Acting BN chairperson Mohamad Hasan said the coalition is not yet ready to run for the seat that was previously contested by former component party, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).
In addition, BN would only decide which party to support after nomination day on April 27.
“We have discussed the Sandakan by-election in-depth and BN has decided not to field a candidate in the Sandakan by-election.
“This is in view of the fact that this seat had been represented by our BN partner all these while – a local Sabah party. We are not yet ready to take part.
“We will think about how to provide support for parties that will be taking part,” he said in a press conference following the BN supreme council meeting in Kuala Lumpur tonight.
Also present were MCA president Wee Ka Siong and MIC president SA Vigneswaran.
The Sandakan by-election was announced following the death of the incumbent MP Stephen Wong Tien Fatt due to a heart attack on March 28.
Previously, Malaysiakini reported that Sabah DAP will likely field Wong’s daughter Vivian Wong to defend the constituency, while Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku Rakyat Sabah (Star) and at least one independent candidate have also expressed interest in contesting in the polls.
PAS, meanwhile, decided to sit out the contest despite its Sabah chapter declaring that it was ready to field a candidate.
Mohamad said BN would choose amongst the contesting parties that are BN-friendly to support.
