George Town Heritage Celebrations to involve 24 local community groups

This year's George Town Heritage Celebrations will feature the cultural rituals and festive events of 24 community groups, says Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.
In a press conference today, Chow said that these groups must be appreciated for their hard work in safeguarding the city's cultural heritage.
"The essence of the George Town Heritage Celebrations street festival is its inclusivity, with programmes designed for people from all walks of life, including the young, old and underprivileged," he noted.
"Essentially, the celebrations promote community cohesion and unity, granting locals an opportunity to experience George Town’s cultural heritage first hand."
Themed 'Let’s celebrate: Rituals and festive events,' the George Town Heritage Celebrations commemorate the 11th anniversary of the city's designation as a Unesco World Heritage site.
According to Chow, the lineup for the street festival will feature seven cultural site excursions, taking place from July 6 to 8.
These excursions will see the aforementioned community groups conduct curated guided tours, that will shine a light on their history, spaces, celebrations, performances and food.
A total of 22 interactive community workshops and 18 performances will also be held during the street festival, which is being organised by George Town World Heritage Inc.
