UPDATED | PKR Youth wants PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan to retract his remarks that Anwar Ibrahim was unfit to be prime minister as he was an ex-convict.
Youth chief Akmal Nasir, in a press statement, described Takiyuddin as harbouring malice against Anwar, who is PKR president.
He claimed that the PAS leader had also indirectly shown his disrespect to Kelantan ruler Sultan Muhammad V, who gave Anwar a full pardon last year when he was the then Agong.
"On May 16, 2018, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had given an unconditional full pardon to Anwar Ibrahim, meaning that the Sodomy II conviction against him was cast aside and thus he is not considered a convict.
"He was also allowed to contest in elections, which means that the issue of the five-year ban under Article 48 of the Federal Constitution does not arise.
"Takiyuddin's statement was clearly made with ill-intention to insult Anwar, and indirectly belittle the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's decision to give Anwar a full pardon," Akmal said.
Akmal claimed that Takiyuddin had also failed to understand the country's law despite himself being a lawyer.
During a ceramah in Sandakan on Wednesday, Takiyuddin had questioned whether the people want "convict" Anwar as future prime minister.
Meanwhile, Amanah Youth deputy chief Faiz Fadzil also urged PAS to respect the fact that Sultan Muhammad V had pardoned the PKR president.
Calling out Takiyuddin's remarks as rude and disrespectful, he alleged that the Islamist party is now willing to compromise on its principles to defend Najib Abdul Razak, who was the prime minister when Anwar was convicted of sodomy.
Faiz also claimed that it is widely known that Anwar was charged and later convicted of sodomy due to political interference during Najib's time.
"PAS should not have raised this issue as it is widely known that Anwar got convicted due to political interference.
"The Sodomy 2 case against Anwar, who was sentenced to five years' jail happened during the administration of kleptocrat Najib, who had already been rejected by the rakyat."
