Critical occupations list expected to be made public next month

"We are preparing a critical occupation list, that means it will, basically, tell you what are the courses you should indulge in, that should be job-orientated and easy to be placed in the market.
"We will list out 10 to 15 jobs where you will surely get jobs. Then we will also tell you 10 to 15 jobs which are critical that you may want to reconsider.
"I expect the middle of December (for the list will be done)," Kulasegaran (above) told Malaysiakini in Parliament yesterday.
The list will also be made available to the public as well as online.
The minister had announced on Nov 20 that schools would be supplied with a list of jobs at risk of becoming irrelevant in the future to serve as a guide for students on courses to avoid when deciding on their tertiary level studies.
He did not go into the specifics when asked by Malaysiakini for examples of jobs at risk.
"I don't want to say it, lah, but I would say... all those who are dealing with fingers, jobs with fingers, are at risk," Kulasegaran said while doing the typing motion with his fingers.
Asked whether he meant IT jobs, he did not elaborate and suggested searching on Google for more information.
"But you see, the thing is 15 percent of the jobs that are around now may not be around in a few years," he said.
A Google search has yielded no further explanation on what 'jobs with fingers' could be.
Malaysiakini has attempted to contact Kulasegaran and his team for more clarification.
This list of critical occupations is a joint effort between the World Bank, the International Labour Organisation, Institute of Labour Market Information and Analysis and Talent Corp (an agency under the Human Resources Ministry).
Kulasegaran said the list is normally prepared every few years but it has never been publicised.
However, he felt it was now important to provide such information to the public through learning institutions.
