Two arrested over PKR Youth brawl

According to Melaka Tengah district police chief Afzanizar Ahmad, the two were being detained to facilitate investigations under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting, punishable with a maximum of two years jail, or fine, or both.
"On the rioting incident which occurred inside the Malacca International Trade Centre (MITC) building in Ayer Keroh and spilt over to the outside of the building during the PKR Youth congress today, police have opened an investigation paper under Section 147 of the Penal Code," he said.
"As of 8pm, police have received three reports lodged over the incident."
Afzanizar added that two people were injured during the incident.
The PKR Youth congress was first marred with a shoving incident when its organising committee barred their sacked permanent chairperson, Mizan Adli Mohd Noor, from entering the premises.
Security personnel at the entrance were seen holding Mizan back and later shutting the doors on him and his supporters.
A shouting match and some shoving ensued.
During the event's lunch break, tensions escalated into a street brawl that dragged on for almost an hour.
The melee started inside MITC and later spilt outside the building.
One of the those injured was Batu PKR Youth treasurer Muhammad Fadhil Ruslan, who was attending the Youth congress as an observer. He has lodged a police report over the matter.
"Batu PKR Youth is sympathetic to the victim and urges the police to conduct a thorough investigation so that justice will prevail," Batu PKR Youth chief Mohd Akmal Ahmad Tamyiz said in a statement today.
He was also urged by PKR president Anwar Ibrahim's statement where he said those involved would have strict action taken against them.
"We are confident that with the amount of proof available, the suspects involved will have the appropriate action taken against them," Akmal said.
"We hope that the spirit of unity at the national congress tomorrow and on Sunday will convey the true spirit of the party," he added.
In the report lodged by Fadhil, he stated that he was trying to calm the groups involved during the fracas when a hard object struck his face.
Fadhil said he then realised that it was a brick thrown from the direction of a group of black-clothed men.
Following the series of incidents, police were seen deploying more officers to the venue, including the Light Strike Force anti-riot personnel.
