The Registrar of Societies (ROS) Selangor has lifted its temporary suspension on MTUC which was imposed on Dec 19, 2019.

A statement released by MTUC president Abdul Halim Mansor (above) and secretary-general J Solomon today stated that the MTUC had received a letter on Tuesday, which also informed that the ROS would not take any action to deregister MTUC.

"The ROS said the two decisions were taken as it was satisfied with MTUC’s explanation, backed by the documents it had submitted in response to several issues raised by ROS arising from complaints lodged by certain disgruntled individuals," the MTUC statement says.

In its letter, the ROS also instructed MTUC to issue relevant notifications as soon as possible to hold its Triennial Delegates Conference (TDC) in accordance with its constitution.

The TDC will also see officials of the MTUC, which claims to represent half a million members, elected to a new three-year term.

In the letter, the ROS also said that it would monitor the MTUC, especially in ensuring that the TDC is held in accordance with the rules and regulations prescribed in the MTUC constitution.

"We would like to record our deepest appreciation to ROS for lifting the suspension and not to proceed with any move to deregister the national labour centre.

"We are very pleased that ROS not only accepted our explanation on the issues it had raised but also for making known its decision speedily in the interest of workers and trade unions in the country," said Halim and Solomon.

They said that the ROS decision to revoke the suspension and remove the cloud of deregistration which hung over MTUC over the past three weeks is a vindication of MTUC’s stand that it had carried out its functions responsibly and would be able to provide satisfactory explanations to ROS queries.

They added that with regard to the TDC, the MTUC leadership has already called for a special general council meeting on Feb 2.

"At this meeting, the council will decide on all relevant matters and preparations pertaining to the TDC, in accordance with the rules of the MTUC constitution," they said.
