Kg Baru redevelopment has royal backing, Khalid tells critics
The Kampung Baru redevelopment plan has received royal backing from the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong as well as from the Selangor ruler, Federal Territories Minister Khalid Samad said today, aiming his statement at critics of the plan.
“This morning, I’d like to say thank you to the Agong in his speech in conjunction with Federal Territories Day. He gave his full support to the efforts to redevelop Kampung Baru.

“This morning, I’d like to say thank you to the Agong in his speech in conjunction with Federal Territories Day. He gave his full support to the efforts to redevelop Kampung Baru.
“Now that the Agong has given his support, the Selangor sultan has also given his support so those who want to make use of the Malays and the Malay spirit (to protest the redevelopment plan), I hope you will check the facts.
"This doesn’t disadvantage the Malays but in fact, it benefits the Malays,” Khalid (photo) said.
He was speaking to reporters today at Federal Territories Day celebrations at Dataran Merdeka in the capital.
This morning, the Agong had decreed that the Kampung Baru redevelopment plan had taken into account the rights and interests of the Malays.
He said the government is currently working to redevelop Kampung Baru through a carefully drafted development plan and that he had been informed it is aimed at empowering the Malays in Kuala Lumpur.
Last November, the Selangor ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah had also assented to the Kampung Baru redevelopment plan.
The Federal Territories Ministry, through the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), plans to acquire land from Kampung Baru landowners and develop the area.
It is in the process of obtaining buy-in from the community for its development plan.
However, critics say it will drive Malays out of the area with this new development.
