UPDATED | Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said he was “guided by the police investigation” when he said he suspected the gatecrashers at his Friday night event to be linked to Umno.
“I was guided by what was mentioned to me by the police themselves when I was briefed.
"I mentioned it after the briefings, so I'm guided by the police investigation.
“(Let’s) allow the police to complete the investigation and I am very happy to hear that action has been taken on three people and I hope it doesn’t just end there,” he said in a press conference after attending a Malaysian Future Leaders School programme in Kuala Lumpur today.
On Friday night, Syed Saddiq and his parents were allegedly forced to flee when a large group of gatecrashers surrounded their table during a Johor Bersatu Youth gathering.
The minister later said that he suspected the gatecrashers were linked to Umno, an allegation which was swiftly denied by Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki. Umno Youth has since lodged a police report over this.
“I welcome their police report. I was informed that they are to sue me and I welcome it as well,” Syed Saddiq said, when asked today about Umno Youth’s police report.
A picture of Syed Saddiq climbing over a fence had been circulated on social media after the incident on Friday night, with many questioning why he had done so.
He explained that he was advised by the police and the event organiser not to confront the group heckling him.
As the gatecrashers were standing at the only exit, he said that was why he, along with several others, had to find a different way to leave the venue.
“If we confront, things would escalate, become much worse. Obviously we don’t want there to be any confrontation as it could be physical and that is the last thing we want to happen.
“So then we used a different route, not just myself but the Malacca state exco Rafiq (Naizamohideen) and the former Johor state exco Mazlan Bujang, who was with us as well.
“So we used the other route, which is obviously to go through the forest,” Syed Saddiq explained.
Three people have been arrested for investigation over the incident on Friday night so far.
