PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution is still waiting for PKR vice-president Zuraida Kamaruddin to respond to his letter of demand for alleged defamation.

"I will leave the matter to my lawyer and we are still waiting for Zuraida to respond. After that, we will proceed with the process," he told a press conference in Putrajaya today.

Saifuddin (photo) previously said his representative had served the letter of demand on Jan 20.

The suit is over Zuraida's claim that Saifuddin allegedly "received millions" from the Kelantan government and the Tabung Tok Kenali, a state-owned trust fund to aid Kelantanese aged 60 and above.

Saifuddin was appointed by the late Kelantan menteri besar and PAS spiritual leader Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat to manage the trust fund from 2004 to 2007.

Saifuddin's defamation suit comes amid strained relations between two party factions — PKR president Anwar Ibrahim and PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali. 

Saifuddin is aligned to Anwar while Zuraida is aligned to Azmin.

Zuraida is also facing disciplinary action for a scathing speech against Anwar last month.

She has since applied to go on leave as PKR vice-president.

Commenting on the move, Saifuddin confirmed Zuraida's application has been approved.

"There is no problem. She has written to the president and the president has tabled it during the political bureau meeting which allowed her to go on leave," he said.
