Defections against people's mandate, say Amanah Youth, Perak DAP

Amanah Youth and Perak DAP have condemned their assemblypersons for quitting their parties following the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan government in Perak, which was replaced with one led by Perikatan Nasional.

Three Perak assemblypersons announced they were quitting their respective Harapan component parties today and declared their support for the new state government.

Paul Yong (Tronoh assemblyperson) and A Sivasubramaniam (Buntong) were from DAP, while Hasnul Zulkarnain Abd Munaim (photo) (Titi Serong) was from Amanah.

The trio threw their support behind Perak Menteri Besar Ahmad Faizal Azumu, who will lead the new PN coalition in the state.

Hasnul was Amanah Youth chief. The wing lamented that Hasnul's defection as "an act of betrayal".

Amanah Youth vice-chief Shazni Munir Mohd Ithnin said Hasnul's decision to join PN was against the people's mandate.

“Amanah Youth is disappointed with Hasnul's betrayal. We strongly condemn his act which goes against the rakyat’s mandate and betray the fight and the people’s trust,” he said in a statement today.

Similarly, Perak DAP said the actions of its two assemblypersons went against the people's mandate in the 2018 general election which rejected a "kleptocratic government".

"The two assemblypersons are lying when they claim they are quitting the party and siding with Faizal for the people," it said in a statement today.

"It should be emphasised that both assemblypersons contested and won on a Harapan ticket and as a DAP candidate.

"Their betrayal has cost them their integrity. They can no longer be trusted."

Yong had said he made his decision to preserve the rakyat’s rights as an elected representative.

This morning, Ahmad Faizal held a special press conference on the formation of the PN government in Perak.

The formation of the new government follows developments at the federal level where the 22-month-old Harapan government was ousted and replaced by PN.
