Covid-19: FT mosques, suraus to cease activities for 10 days

In a statement today, Islamic Affairs Minister Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri (photo) said this was decreed by the Agong, adding that the suspension will be for 10 days.
This followed a meeting between the Health Ministry and a special muzakarah committee yesterday.
In terms of funerals for Covid-19 victims, mosque and surau officials are urged to follow a 2015 decision by the Fatwa Committee's 107th meeting on the funeral rites for individuals who contracted the Ebola disease.
"The requirements can be loosened if the handling of the corpse threatens one's health," said Zulkifli, adding that the corpse can be contained in a plastic film if necessary.
This is an escalation of preventive measures undertaken by the Islamic Affairs Ministry.
Friday prayers were allowed to take place last week, albeit with shorter sermons, and individuals were required to perform the wuduk (ablution) before heading to the mosque.
As of today, Malaysia has recorded 553 Covid-19 cases.
The past week has been described by Health Ministry as the second wave of Covid-19 infections, with many cases being attributed to a three-day religious event in Sri Petaling, Kuala Lumpur, earlier this month.
