The contest for Bersatu’s presidency will see a straight fight between incumbent Muhyiddin Yassin and challenger Mukhriz Mahathir.
This was according to a list of eligible candidates released for the Bersatu party election.
Mohd Faiz Azlee Sham, who was supposed to be in the running when nominations closed, was not on the list.
Similarly, there will be a straight fight for the Bersatu deputy presidency between former secretary-general Marzuki Yahaya and Perak Menteri Besar Ahmad Faizal Azumu.
Anas Akashah Nazri, who was initially in the running as well, was not listed as a candidate.
The party's election director Syed Hamid Albar when contacted said Mohd Faiz and Anas Akashah did not meet the requirements stipulated in the party constitution. He did not elaborate on this.
Malaysiakini understood the party rules stipulated that candidates for the party presidency or deputy presidency must either have served on the party's supreme council or be a division head before being able to offer themselves as a candidate for this position.
The inaugural party leadership elections will be held in the second half of this year. The date has yet to be specified.
Bersatu chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad has retained his position uncontested.
